The Vanity Project - Radio Sampler

A couple of weeks ago, I got an email from Greg @ Flagship Recordings.
He said, that he would love to get my thoughts and comments about the (TVP) music,
so he wants to send me an advance CD sampler.
What a nice gesture! Thanks a lot Greg and Flagship Recordings!

So here are my thoughts/comments on those four tracks:

That's All, That's All
You can listen to that song here!
An extremely beautiful song!
I have to say though, I wouldn't have chosen it to be the first single.
I don't see it to be very "radio friendly".

Wilted Rose
This sounds like a BIG HIT to me!
After a very cool/fun intro follows an 8 bar harmonica part that leads into the first verse.
It's a sad song, but still very catchy.
I believe I hear a mandolin in there(?) and I think it sounds like Kevin?!
I guess I have to wait for the actual album to find out for sure.

So. Cal
A personal favorite of mine.
Also a very catchy song with hit potential.
Makes me homesick for Los Angeles (I love LA, but I can also laugh about it).
And it makes me homesick for music of the 60s/70s too.
I absolutely love, how Steven phrases "Californ-I-A", so it rhymes with "lonely day".

Hit And Run
Not my favorite song. Maybe I would like it better, if arranged differently.
It does have a great chorus.
And there is a part (bridge ?) with kind of a Latin Rhythm going on, that I really like.

I really look forward for The Vanity Project album.
And I hope that one day I have a chance to see Steven perform his solo stuff.
I would actually like to see him perform his stuff two ways, by himself AND with a band.

Some Info on The Vanity Project album:
by Steven Page (answer to a question on the BNL Blog - April 11, 2005)
... 2) I will probably do a couple of weeks of solo acoustic promo stuff this summer to support the Vanity Project album 3) The Vanity Project is my side project - it's a collection of songs that Stephen Duffy and I wrote and recorded together over the last 5 or 6 years. Although there are a few other players on the disc (Kev plays on a track, my brother plays drums on a couple), it's essentially him and me, but it's not really a band, more of an outlet for this Page/Duffy material. ...
by Marc - Flagship Recordings (Editorial Reviews/Album Description at Amazon.com)
THE VANITY PROJECT is a self-titled album of twelve songs from Barenaked Ladies lead singer and co-founder, Steven Page. The album also spotlights Page's frequent co-writing partner and musical accomplice, Stephen Duffy (Tin Tin, The Lilac Time.) Eleven of the twelve songs are Page-Duffy compositions, and the twelfth (So. Cal) is written solely by Steven Page. While the distinctive lead vocals of Page can be heard on all twelve tracks, the music was performed by both Page and Duffy with occasional guest appearances from friends (BNL's Kevin Hearn) and family (Page's brother, Matthew, and wife, Carolyn.)
